Authorities have again increased the amount of reward money in this investigation. Crime Stoppers will now pay up to $127,000 for information leading to an arrest of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Sgt. Kenneth Vann.

SAN ANTONIO -- A Bexar County deputy is dead, shot multiple times in what officers are calling a chilling and senseless crime.

Officials say the deputy, 48-year-old Sgt. Kenneth Vann was responding to a call on the southeast side of town when he pulled up to a stop light. As Vann was waiting for the light to change at Rigsby and Loop 410 a small white car pulled up and began firing at the officer.

It happened around 2 a.m. Saturday. The semiautomatic gunfire shattered the squad car’s windows, killing the deputy behind the wheel.

Authorities say the deputy never even got a shot off before the assault.

The squad car rolled through the intersection and ended up striking barricades under the overpass.  Witnesses called police, who discovered Vann dead in the driver's seat.

Investigators shut down the intersection for more than six hours as they collected shell casings and other evidence.

Officers with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were on the scene, too, with a K-9 unit to gather clues.

San Antonio police and U.S. marshals were following up on leads and conducting interviews. They have impounded a white car that was found near the scene of the fatal shooting.

Authorities said they have a lot of leads, but thus far there have been no arrests. Nor do they know what the motive was for the assault.

"We're still trying to develop that information as to if it was random, if it was some kind of gang thing, or if he was targeted. Maybe it was a misidentification. Maybe they were looking for somebody else? Who knows? I don't know," said Deputy Chief Dale Bennett with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Vann's wife is also a sergeant in the sheriff's office. He also had two sons and a daughter.

Authorities are asking the public for any information about the crime: contact 210-335-6070, or 210-224-STOP.

Crime Stoppers and the U.S. Marshal's Office upped the reward to $77,000 and then the FBI chipped in another $50,00. That makes for a total of $127,000 in reard money for tips leading to an arrest in this case.
