With fewer people these days carrying cash around, this year for the first time in San Antonio, the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Drive is accepting credit cards.

The Salvation Army kicked-off its century old campaign in critical need of donations.

This year the local chapter of the Salvation Army has seen more people than ever sign up for assistance.  Many who gave in years past are now asking for help.

"With increase demand for services and less donations, we are really counting on this Red Kettle campaign to help us through 2010," said Jose Macias, a Salvation Army spokesperson.

Last year the Salvation Army gave Tamara Moore, a single mother of two, Christmas gifts and clothes for her children.

This year, Moore is working as a bell ringer outside Rolling Oaks Mall.

"People helped me out a lot so I just wanted to give something back," she said.

During the first few days of accepting credit cards, very few donors have used the cashless option

However, the Salvation Army hopes with greater awareness, credit card donations will add up to more than just a drop in the bucket.
