SAN ANTONIO -- Police say a man has died from his injuries after getting shot in the hip during a drug-related robbery on the city's northwest side.

The deceased was identified as James Whitley. He was 24.

San Antonio police said the shooting occurred after Whitley was approached by two teens outside a laundromat in the 3500 block of West Avenue.

Thinking he was about to be robbed, Whitley allegedly opened fire, grazing the 15-year-old in the head. The teen fired back, police said, hitting Whitely in the hip.

Whitley was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The 15-year-old suspect was taken into police custody but was not immediately charged. Police said he is claiming self defense in the shooting. The 18-year-old suspect is on the run.

Police said the shooting appears to be the result of a botched drug robbery.
