SAPD: Off-duty officer fatally shoots intruder

SAN ANTONIO -- A man was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer after allegedly breaking into the officer's second story apartment on Tuesday morning.

The shooter was identified in a San Antonio police report as Alfredo Gonzalez, a reserve officer for the Poteet Police Department.

Gonzalez told police he was watching YouTube videos with friends inside apartment in the 1700 block of Jackson Keller when he heard the sound of breaking glass just after 3 a.m.

He allegedly looked out his window to see if someone was breaking into a car, and then heard the sound coming from his kitchen window, police said.

Gonzalez told police he grabbed his service weapon and found an intruder climbing through his kitchen window. He allegedly identified himself as an officer and then shot the suspect once in the face when he did not back down.

The suspect was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m., according to the police report.

The name of the suspect was not immediately available. Police said he was carrying a pair of gloves and pliers but no weapons.
