A man is in the hospital with a broken ankle after he slipped and fell into a 20-foot-deep manhole.

It happened around 9:30 Tuesday morning near Loop 1604 and N.W. Military. He was just walking by the manhole, officials say, when he slipped and fell into the hole. He was trapped, but rescue crews with Shavano Park responded, and with the help of the San Antonio Fire Dpartment, they were able to pull the man to safety.

The victim has been taken to a hospital and is in good condition, though he did suffer a broken ankle and a knee injury.

The name of the victim has not been released. The man was doing some work for an engineering firm that is building a project in a sewer construction zone.
