The setting was a north San Antonio movie theater, and the plot was simply to sell a car stereo reportedly offered up on Craigslist. But the finale rivaled a fight sequence from a feature film, ending with one man gunned down in the theater's parking lot.
It happened Sunday night in the 13700 block of Embassy Row at the Embassy Movie Theater. A victim in his 20s met with a group to swap a stereo for cash, police said, but the group wasn't interested in that deal. Police say a gun was pulled, which led to a fight in the parking lot.
Albert Garibay got his hands back on the gun, investigators said. Then, he reportedly opened fire two to three times. Police said the victim was taken from the theater parking to University Hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was listed in critical but stable condition Monday morning.
Meanwhile, Garibay and two others ran from the scene. Police said a saturation of their patrol officers and special police forces tracked down the 24-year-old.
Garibay is charged with aggravated robbery. His bond is set at $100,000. There has been no word on whether anyone else will be charged in this case.
Investigators suspected drug use may have contributed to the violent encounter. But they said they didn't find any evidence to support that theory.
SAPD Sgt. Giles Seavely warned residents to be extra careful about meetings related to websites like Craigslist.
"Whenever you're doing Craigslist, and I don't know if they were, you want to meet in a public place," he said initially at the scene. "Of course, that's what they did. But even the best laid plans sometimes go awry."
