Should parents pay a teen curfew fine even if they give their child permission to be out late? It's one idea that is being pitched in New Braunfels to help curb teen crime and keep more teens from becoming victims.
On Monday night, Police Chief Ron Everett presented to New Braunfels City Hall highlights of other teen curfew laws that suggest teens under the age of 17 years old should turn in by 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and by midnight on weekends.
According to statistics juvenile crime is on the rise in New Braunfels. In 2008, there were 92 detentions. In 2009 that more than double to 218 detentions.
But some parents say it's their job to police their teens. "It's not up to the people who think they own the world," said Ruben Cabereno, a parent who opposes a teen curfew law.
So far the police chief has only presented ideas to City Hall and he says no formal ordinance has been drafted.
