SAN ANTONIO -- Northside Independent School District expects 97,000 students at its schools today. NISD is opening two new campuses to help accommodate some of those people.

San Antonio’s largest school district is opening two new elementary schools. One is named for the late Judge Andy Mireles who served on the bench in Bexar County for more than 20 years.

This school is a way of honoring his work on behalf of young people. Mireles was particularly instrumental in making changes in juvenile justice.

The school will house more than 500 students.

The principal said the teachers have been working long hours to make sure everything is ready for the students, many of whom would have been going to Hoffmann Elementary.

“Our main goal, our main objective this year, is to bring the community together, to get to know our families, the community, our business partners and work together to make Mireles Elementary the best place to be,” stated principal Patricia Sanchez.

Northside now has 112 schools, including 70 elementary schools, 18 middle schools, 10 comprehensive high schools, five magnet programs and nine special schools.

The other new campus opening today is Lieck Elementary School.
