SAN ANTONIO -- Mayor Julian Castro says a city councilwoman's alleged comments on homosexuals are hurtful, misinformed and do not represent San Antonio.

According to a report, an aide for District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan secretly recorded the councilwoman saying homosexuals are "disgusting" and that gays should not be allowed to adopt children.

KENS 5's Gary Cooper caught up with the mayor on Friday morning, just hours after the report was first published.

  • Castro: "Councilwoman Chan's comments were hurtful and misinformed and they don't reflect the views of the overwhelming majority of San Antonians. San Antonio is a city where everybody belongs. We're a city that treats folks with respect and appreciates our diversity."
  • Cooper: "Have you reached out to councilwoman Chan?"
  • Castro: "We haven't spoken yet. We will speak, I'm sure, we haven't spoken yet."
  • Cooper: "Do you anticipate that happening sometime today?"
  • Castro: "I would imagine so."

The recording was reportedly taken during a May 21 meeting in which Chan and her staff discussed proposed updates to the city's nondiscrimination ordinance.

Chan was out of town on Friday, although her staff said she will be releasing an official statement later in the day.

The mayor also went public with his comments on his official Twitter account, pointing to the recording as proof that San Antonio needs to update its non-discrimination ordinance.
