Guadalupe County authorities say the cable-barrier “lifeline” is slowing making its way toward their county line... saving lives as it goes.
The latest incident involved a runaway tractor-trailer rig at 4 a.m. Monday.
The trucker apparently lost consciousness and died at the wheel, but the cable prevented him from entering the east-bound lanes where he could've hit other motorists head-on.
"It has definitely shown that it can hold back anybody," said Laura Lopez with TxDot.
So what's holding it back from completion? Funding.
As it trickles in, the Texas Department of Transportation has to prioritize.
Guadalupe County’s first-responders want it at the top of the list; there were five fatalities within the last year along this same stretch of 10 and the cable's only stretched an extra two miles or so since then.
Lopez added, “"Interstate 10 is definitely an area where it's not completed yet. And we are hopefully going to be finishing IH-10 this year."
