It is a general rule of thumb for college football fans; the later a bowl game takes place, the bigger the game. For the first time in its history, the Valero Alamo Bowl will take place after New Year’s Day.
Add that to a prime slot on Saturday night and increased interest from the Texas Tech coaching saga and this year’s Alamo Bowl matching Michigan State and Texas Tech might be the most intriguing ever.
Ironically, next year the bowl will get higher ranked teams as they begin a partnership with the Pac 10 conference. The Pac 10 will send their highest non-BCS bowl bound team while the Big 12 will send a higher-ranked team than they traditionally have.
“We have raised our team payouts.” said Alamo Bowl President and CEO Derrick Fox “We have a chance to move up in the mix.”
Fox says the Alamo Bowl has also benefitted from San Antonio’s attractions and hopes the combination of a great city and marquee bowl matchup will make the bowl game one of the premier non-BCS bowls in the country.
“We got the best destination city in the country. It is so user friendly and everyone you talk to loves San Antonio and all it has to offer.”
