KERRVILLE -- The holiday season is supposed to be a time of peace and joy, but that feeling was briefly taken away from a church in Kerrville after their Christmas decorations were vandalized.
“We left church Sunday night feeling good about these decorations and what they contributed to the sense of worship,” said Pastor John Wurster of First Presbyterian Church.
On Wednesday afternoon, the decorations had already been restored. But earlier in the week, they were obviosly trampled.
“The luminarias had been kicked around and scattered, in some cases broken," Wurster said. "Some of the wreaths had been taken off the doors and one of our sings had been bent.”
Church members were aghast.
“Grinch stole Christmas," Anne Turner said. "Bah-humbug type feeling, a really sad feeling."
“To take a symbol like light and deface it, or break it, I think has a double affect of taking a significant symbol of the season and rejecting that,” Wurster said.
Nobody knows who vandalized the church’s decorations, but the suspect or suspects will remain on the minds of church members this holiday season.
“I think more than anything we were sad for that person, or persons and if Christmas means something of joy and hope, they obviously don’t have that in their lives,” Wurster said.
“The way our Church looks at it, we just need to pray for people that do things like that,” Turner said.
