**FOR USE WITH AP LIFESTYLES** **FILE** This Dec. 18, 2004 file photo shows gingerbread houses in the lobby of the Park Plaza Regency Lodge hotel in Omaha, Neb. Unless you have a culinary degree, an incredibly steady hand and a few months to spare, you probably won't be able to recreate those breathtaking gingerbread houses that dazzle from bakeshop windows. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your gingerbread dreams. The trick is that instead of trying to create an architectural wonder, focus on creating lasting memories. There’s so much going on, it’s hard to narrow this weekend’s picks down to a select few fabulous activities for families. There’s Santa (almost everywhere you turn) and more tamales (at the Witte) and even a bike rodeo.

Here, we’ve found a few fly-under-the-radar events you might want to know about.

For example: gingerbread houses. Not just any gingerbread houses, but gingerbread houses you design with the help of members from the Jefferson High School Architecture Club. Now that’s an event! It’s the Architecture Foundation’s 3rd Annual Family Gingerbread Workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for Architecture at Pearl Brewery on Saturday, Dec. 10. And it’s free.

But before you go make your gingerbread house, why don’t you stop by The Twig bookstore for storytime, complete with gingerbread cookies, hilarious Gingerbread Man and Gingerbaby stories, and a gingerbread craft -- one that can't run away! All ages of TWIGLETS are welcome. And it’s free!

Later in the day, grab your four-legged friends and head to Market Square for the annual Blessing of the Animals. There will be local entertainment, arts and crafts and children's activities, too.

Heading into next week, the San Antonio Symphony Players Association will perform a community concert of holiday favorites at Coker United Methodist Church on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free with the donation of non-perishable food items and/or a monetary donation (suggested $10 per person).

On Wednesday at 11 a.m., the Grand Hyatt Riverwalk invites you and your children (both two-legged and four-legged) to the hotel for a pet-themed holiday “tails” story time with Santa Paws and special guest readers.

As you head into the holidays, San Antonio Children’s Museum offers art, science and engineering half-day holiday camps -- just in case you need a few hours to wrap presents, clean up or just have some peace and quiet.
