General Motors has made a profit for the first time in almost three years. GM says booming demand for new models in North America and cost-cutting helped it earn $865 million in the first quarter. CEO Ed Whitacre predicts the company will continue to be profitable through the end of the year.

The U.S. government still owns more than 60% of GM.
