Around 1:30 Friday afternoon, about 100 Fox Tech students walked out of class in protest over the end of the Chili Bowl. The Chili Bowl was the name for the annual rivalry game between Fox Tech and Lanier High School. It was a 67 year tradition.

Students say they had planned the protest over the last week through text messages and whispered discussions in the hallway.

Fox Tech Junior Benjamin Sanchez said, "The principal came out, and they were treating it like a joke. They were laughing at us because we were chanting 'save the chili bowl.'"

Students say the reason they wanted to protest is because they felt they had not been included in the decision to end the Chili Bowl. District officials announced their decision November 3 to shut down Fox Tech football as part of turning Fox Tech High School into a magnet school.

Sanchez said, "They didn't ask us for our opinion. They didn't tell us anything about the meetings."

i was part of creating it and i attended it too. protesting about Chili Bowl was not the main reason for having this protest. the actual reason was to attract the attention of the school Board and of the superintendent Robert Duron. we wanted them to listen and hear us because of the lack of respect and concern they have over what we the Students of Tech and the Parents have to say. they are ELECTED to be who they are. what happened to NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND? well obviously, we were left behind without even a look back. the STUDENTS are the ones that are affected by the decisions made by the Board. all they care about is MONEY. not the quality of education or happiness of the students and families. there has been talk of EXPELLING the students who took part in the protest. RIDICULOUS. having it was our ONLY way to make sure that administrators and the Board heard our voices. we will never stop fighting until we win. and if we dont, well good luck Board in finding new jobs. ;)
