As crews attacked a large fire at an area salvage yard, billowing smoke could be seen at least 10 miles away early Monday evening.
The flames concentrated around a pallet at Benny's Auto Salvage in the 9400 block of New Laredo Highway, just a mile and a half from the San Antonio Fire Department's Logistics Headquarters.
Trucks were carting water in, dousing the flames and then going back to get more water in a relay of fire relief.
Benny's has been closed for about a month. Most of the old cars had already been removed from the property before the flames ignited a large amount of wood near the northeast corner of the complex.
A metal fence surrounding all four sides of the salvage yard kept the flames from reaching a nearby field of tall grass.
The building that is on the west side of the complex does not appear to have suffered any damage.
