SAN ANTONIO -- A body has been recovered after a man went missing from a fishing boat on Calaveras Lake on Monday, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
Family members said the empty boat and the cell phone found inside the boat belonged to 67-year-old John Engleton.
Deputies recovered a body from the lake at around 11 a.m. but would not immediately confirm whether the body belonged to Engleton.
Rescue workers had been called to the lake early Monday morning after a witness who had been fishing on shore said he heard a commotion and went to investigate.
Fisherman Ron Coberly said he heard somebody yell for help. He grabbed his flashlight and walked toward the voice when he heard two more cries for help.
"And when we got down there, we didn't see anybody," Coberly said. "We saw a boat that was empty, nobody was in it. They had five fishing poles set up out in the water -- tackle box, everything laying there. We didn't see anyone, hear a splash or anything."
The emergency call was sent out at about 6 a.m. Monday. The SAPD Eagle helicopter joined the search from the air.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office called Engleton's two sons to the scene early Monday morning. They provided a photo of their father, an avid fisherman, proudly showing off a large catch.
