SAN ANTONIO -- About 45 dogs and cats will never have an unwanted litter due to the work of a nursing students group.

UT Health Science Center students spent Saturday providing free spay and neuter services as part of the SpaySA program designed to lower the unwanted pet population in certain parts of the city.

"Dogs will reproduce twice a year, cats - four to five or six times a year," said Kathleen McGowan of SpaySA. "It's just endless with them. So that reduces the number. "

If about 40 animals were spayed and neutered, that prevents about 1,000 from being born, McGowan said.

Low-cost rabies vaccinations also were available.
