SAN ANTONIO -- A CrossFit athlete is reminding women everywhere to always be alert after one of the gym's members was allegedly attacked while waiting outside the gym on Wednesday morning.
Chely Galvan admits that she's stronger than many men she meets.
"In the CrossFit area, I certainly beat a lot of guys," she said.
But after a fellow athlete was robbed and sexually assaulted outside of their northwest-side gym, Galvan is reminding women everywhere to always be alert, no matter how fit they might be.
San Antonio police said a woman was approached by a man in a green ski mask outside the CrossFit Mettle gym on Golden Quail near Huebner Road at around 5 a.m. The man allegedly took the woman's cell phone and made her perform a sex act.
"That might draw negative attention to the CrossFit community," Galvan said. And while it might, Galvan said she hopes it doesn't draw so much negativity that women will abandon their workout routine.
Galvan said it's unfortunate, but the reality is that such attacks can happen anywhere. It's important for women everywhere to stay vigilant, she said.
"Come in with a friend and don't walk out to your car until you see a coach or someone you recognize," she said.
Galvan said this is a reminder to women to be aware of their surroundings and to try to use the buddy system, especially late at night or early in the morning.
