WISE COUNTY, Texas -- Animal experts are baffled by a small, hairless creature found dead on the golf course at Runaway Bay in Wise County.

Maintenance worker Tony Potter picked it up Wednesday morning.  To him it looked a little like a raccoon with no hair.

"Definitely not a dog," he said.

Potter showed the remains to several people and then took it to a veterinarian's office in Bridgeport.  He said no one there could identify it, either.

"My wife wouldn't let me keep it in the freezer," he said, so Potter gave it to the Center for Animal Research and Education, a big cat sanctuary in Bridgeport.

The creature is dark brown, about 18 inches long, with a black nose and a face resembling a rodent -- but with long canine teeth jutting from the upper and lower jaws.

The front claws have narrow digits about a half-inch long, with long, narrow nails.

Whatever this is has powerful rear legs "almost like a kangaroo," according to CARE research assistant Sherre Sacher.   She said the front claws look like they're made for digging.

The tail is like that of an opossum, but not quite as long.

"It's really exciting," Sacher said.   "I can't wait to find out what it is."

The center hopes to hear from experts who would like to examine the animal. Some who have seen it wonder if it's the legendary chupacabra, an animal that supposedly sucks the blood of goats.

If nothing else, one thing appears certain:  This is the ugliest bogey ever seen on the Runaway Bay golf course.

SILENCE people.. This drunk maintenance guy is playing an evil joke and somehow came upon a dead tasmanian devil and placed it there. I think we can all agree it has been shaved whatever it is. He got his 2 minutes of fame but I would have bought a separate freezer and charged 5 bucks to see it and told the wife no more family trips to the local walmart if she did not let me keep it (That gets all Texan women riled up). So go look up tazmanian devil ( Not the looney toons one) and tell me watcha think. Now we just gotta get that b@stard bigfoot to come die while he is hittin some links on the back 9.

Does anyone else notice a strong resemblance to Tiger Woods....or is it just me? He probably crawled into this fetal position to avoid being hit by more golf clubs....

To me it looks like a Hairless Chinese Crested dog. They do have odd hind legs. Just my two cents.

It kind of looks like a vicious Winnie the Pooh after eating too much honey.

I have pictures of this dog from Peru, I took the pictures in 1999 in Lima, it is not a chupacabra or any other kind of monster, it is a dog that has adapted to the desert conditions of the area, nothing more or less. It is a canine, and am supprised that vets have not released that info.. geez, somebody needs a life

A mysterious figure on a golf course? Could it be the killer OJ was looking for?

I had to comment on this- I looked at the pictures before I read the article or comments. I am a fish biologist and also an avid hunter and fisherman, and I am 99% certain this is just a dead raccoon with a bad case of mange or some other disease. The skull, canine teeth, tail, and other dimensions all are characteristic of a raccoon. If you look closely at the head picture, you can even see the characteristic 'mask' in the skin pigment around its eyes. Slayer- yes, raccoons have a thumb on their front paws. That is the only thing that is not clearly visible on these pictures. But due to how bloated the dead animal is, the paws on this animal are swollen and stiffer than they are when the animal is alive. It is not a dog or any other canine- canine paws have a different skeletal structure.

Look at this website. Its not a racoon. Google or Yahoo the word Xoloitzcuintle or phrase ancient aztec dog. http://sweet-lucys.com/hairlessdogs/xoloitzcuintli.html

Biowiz - it's not a Racoon. Racoons have 'hands' with an apposing thumb like humans so that they can grab and pick up food etc. This animal has front paws like a dog.

I wish they would have biologists (real ones) at this before it's released to the media. Clearly, this is a RACCOON. Whether the lose of hair is genetic, due to disease, or from elemental stimuli is the only thing in question. Mystery solved.
