SAN ANTONIO -- Police responded to reports of a shooting at the B&J Grocery Store on the city's west-side around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said the suspect grabbed an 18-pack of Bud Light, placed it on the counter and acted like he was going to pay for the the beer. However, plans changed when the suspect began striking the cashier in the face several times causing him to drop to the ground.

The suspect then walked around the counter, grabbed a wad of cash out of the register and made his way toward the store's exit with the Bud Light.

This gave the cashier just enough time, police said, because he then grabbed a revolver and shot at the suspect approximately five times. At least one of the bullets hit the suspect, but he continued his escape and attempted to hide out in a vacant house on Santiago Street, just one block away from the B&J Grocery Store.

Police found the suspect with a gunshot wound to the stomach area and transported him to an area hospital to undergo surgery.

As for the clerk, police said he would most likely not face any charges because his actions were a justifiable defense.
