SAN ANTONIO -- A 19-year-old man was hospitalized late Tuesday night after crashing his car off the fifth level of a parking garage at North Star Mall.
The injured teen has been identified as Johnroy Barrones.
San Antonio police said Barrones and another driver did not go to the mall to shop. Instead, they were racing in the parking garage.
Barrones busted through a concrete barrier around 10:45 p.m. and landed upside down five floors below.
Police estimated the plunge to be around 49 feet.
Barrones was conscious and breathing after the crash. He was taken to University Hospital in stable condition.
Police said he was only saved because he was wearing a seat belt.
Traffic investigators said they have spoken to the other driver and criminal charges are pending for both men.
Workers had to cut off a chunk of concrete that was left dangling from the fifth floor.
