SAN ANTONIO — While thousands of kids were out trick-or-treating on Thursday evening, close to 600 sex offenders were sitting in a mandatory training session.

The county's probation office required all sex offender who are also on probation to attend the meeting from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

"They’re in a contained environment so we know what they're doing,” said Shannon Jones, of the Bexar County Probation Department.

However, the meeting was only for those on probation.

In San Antonio, there are thousands registered sex offenders who are no longer on probation.

Jones said many of those registered offenders do not have restrictions on where and where they can't be on Halloween.

“So it’s important for parents to know they still have to be cautious and know where their kids are,” Jones warned.

According to the Department of Public Safety, there are more than 2,500 registered sex offenders in Bexar County.

Officials with the probation department said they are prepared to track down any sex offender who do not show up to the meeting. In years past, they said all but 10 showed up.
