HOUSTON – A deputy constable in Houston accused of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Bexar County was arrested Tuesday afternoon, Harris County Precinct 4 officials said.

Deputy Gerardo Hernandez was taken into custody upon his arrival at work and was in the process of being booked into the Harris County Jail.

Precinct 4 officials said internal affairs notified them Tuesday morning about a Bexar County grand jury indictment and an open felony warrant from San Antonio police regarding a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Hernandez was indicted late last week.

Precinct 4 Chief Jim Sumner said he learned that the alleged incident occurred in 2002 and that San Antonio police were not made aware of the incident until December 2011.

Hernandez has been with Precinct 4 since August 2008. He is awaiting extradition to Bexar County.
