Bexar County deputies are investigating a fatal accident involving a family of pedestrians and a driver, who authorities say was probably on her cell phone.
The accident took place shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday as the family of four walked southbound on Foster Road near I-10 E, facing oncoming traffic.
Authorities said the driver of a Cadillac lost control of her vehicle, drove onto the sidewalk, hit a telephone pole and then careened into the family.
The boys, three and four years old, are both in critical condition at University Hospital. The three-year-old was transported by helicopter.
Their 35-year-old mother is also in critical condition.
Many people stopped to help the injured family, but there was little they could do for the 31-year-old father. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt. Edward Conger with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said the 38-year-old female driver in the Cadillac may have been on the phone. They're trying to determine whether she was talking or texting.
The driver was found in the backseat of her vehicle. She had no visible injuries, but was transported to the Baptist Hospital.
Authorities will continue their investigation into the cause of this horrific accident. The speed limit in the area is 45 miles per hour.
