A warning from the Better Business Bureau could save you big bucks and a major headache.
According to the BBB names of well-known banks such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo are fraudulently being used to steal personal information.
BBB says targeted consumers will receive a text or call from someone claiming to be with the bank, asking for a social security number to confirm the account.
The fraudulent text often includes a web link and, or a phone number. When called, the automated message may inform you that there is a problem with your debit card, and will prompt you to enter your 16-digit debit card number.
Do not give it to them.
The agency suggests instead you should contact your bank right away if it happens to you. Use a number on your bank statement or directory, not the one listed in an email or text. They advise you against clicking on any links.
The BBB says if you have already become a victim of a scam, you should contact your financial institution immediately.
