A homeowner on the city's west side demonstrated the occupational hazards of burglary to a group trying to break into his home Tuesday night. San Antonio police said he opened fire on two to three males. According to officers, one suspect took a bullet to the backside.

Police said it all started just before midnight in the 8500 block of Timberwolf. The suspected burglars were reportedly trying to kick in the victim's door. But he fired shots to counter the attempted home invasion. It's unclear what they may have been trying to steal.

According to investigators, they received two phone calls following the incident. Police said one call came from the 5400 block of Prairie Flower. It was where they found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his rear-end. Then, officers got an emergency call from the homeowner on Timberwolf about his attempted burglary that turned into a shooting.

Investigators believe the wounded suspect was one of the culprits trying to burglarize the man's westside home. The suspect was taken to University Hospital with an injury described as non-life threatening. Criminal charges against the man are pending.

Meantime, police continue to hunt for the alleged burglar's accomplices. As for the homeowner, he is not expected to face criminal charges in the shooting. Police believe the situation is covered under Texas' Castle Doctrine which allows homeowners to use deadly force to protect their home and property.

The case must still be reviewed by the Bexar County District Attorney's Office and put before a grand jury for consideration.
