DALLAS -- Southbound lanes of Interstate 35E at Illinois Avenue in Dallas are closed as authorities investigate a deadly crash involving seven vehicles.

Two people died in the wreck just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities are investigating the possibility that some of the drivers may have been racing.

Three people were transported to area hospitals.

Traffic could be seen backed up throughout the morning as the area on the interstate at the site of the crash was shut down. For those who take that route, Beckley Avenue serves as an alternative choice.

Drivers stuck in the traffic dangerously tried to exit the highway by crossing through grass and going the wrong direction on at least one highway service road.
