SAN ANTONIO -- A new Thanksgiving debate emerges: Go shopping or stay home with family?
While you were keeping an eye on your turkey in the oven at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Marina Esquivel and her family were in line at Target on Loop 410 and I-10.
“I’m buying an iPhone 7 and my mom is getting an iPhone 7 too, and then we're going to get some watches,” Esquivel said.
While many of the same deals are available online, the Esquivel family is taking advantage of one deal that will put $500 dollars in Target gift cards in their pockets, but they can only get it in store. That's why they're willing to brave the lines for the first time this year.
“It's a good deal. I'm taking advantage of it so my mom doesn't have to spend as much money to replace my phone,” Esquivel said.
Other shoppers like to hit the sales for the sport of it. Ana Lisa Sanchez and her family have been doing it for the past seven years.
“I feel like it's not the same online,” Sanchez said. “On Black Friday, you get more of a rush. You put more effort into it.”
Esquivel says she feels bad that employees have to work so she can shop. Some retailers feel the same way. The company that owns TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Marshalls released an ad celebrating its decision to close for the holiday.
“We are closed for Thanksgiving because family time comes first,” the commercial says. “Let's put more value on what really matters. This season, bring back the holidays.”
Many other stores are closed for Thanksgiving too, but it won't stop those wanting a deal on a TV from lining up, even if they have fewer options.
