Former SA300 director leaving city position, Sculley says

Benavides will remain available until March as a resource to the commission for questions that arise regarding the planning and execution of the Tricentennial events.

Edward Benavides, who headed the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission until November, has resigned his position with the City of San Antonio, City Manager Sheryl Sculley said in a memorandum to the mayor and city council late Friday.

Sculley said that the resignation was in lieu of reassignment. Benavides will remain available until March as a resource to the commission for questions that arise regarding the planning and execution of the Tricentennial events.

Sculley also asked that Assistant City Manager Carlos Contreras, who has been serving as interim executive director of the commission, be promoted to be the permanent executive director. City Council is expected to take action on that proposal at its Jan. 24 session.
