This Thursday, it hits home.
Six weeks ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Now, I am sharing my story because if it helps one man get a physical or have a prostate exam, and maybe saves one man's life, then it's worth sharing one of the most intimate and frightening times of my life.
Prostate cancer is the third-leading cause of death in American men. That’s why, when my PSA level had risen, I set up an appointment with my urologist, Dr. Ian Thompson III.
It runs in my family, as my father and brother are both prostate cancer survivors. My mother and sister are breast cancer survivors. This is why when the doctor wanted a biopsy, I didn't hesitate.
The biopsy confirmed that I have cancer. At the time, they thought it was a slow-growing, low-grade, Stage I cancer. But to get a better look, Dr. Thompson ordered an MRI. It was about an hour-long process that was completely painless; well, except for that IV stick.
Four days later, we learned that it was much different from the original diagnosis.
So that brings us to now.
I have clinical Stage III prostate cancer, and it's scary.
Men, I’ve stayed on top of my health for years. If it’s caught early enough, prostate cancer is one of the most treatable and curable forms of cancer.
So please, go to the doctor and get a physical, including a prostate exam. It's a little uncomfortable, but it could save your life.
I’m having surgery to remove my prostate and hopefully all of the cancer. Thursday is my last day with you for a while, but I promise I’ll be back and I’ll stay in touch with you through the recovery process.
