Weight loss program offers cash to shed pounds

SAN ANTONIO -- Weight loss can be a struggle for many people but an online company is using cash to motivate you to lose weight and keep it off.

The program is on the website DietBet.com. Users sign up, choose a challenge and decide how much money to bet for the game. If users lose the weight-loss goal, they get part of the winnings.

KENS 5 spoke with a San Antonio woman who has lost 20 pounds using DietBet. Holly Smith works from home and also takes care of her three children. She said she eats healthy foods but losing weight has been hard.

"So, with my third, the weight was just not coming off like my first two children. My husband actually completed an iron man in May," Smith said. "So that was very motivational. Didn't want him to get more fit and me not be."

Smith said DietBet has motivated her to work out. She's won about $60 after completing several of the challenges.

"Everybody likes the idea of making money. And they realize that putting your money on the line, you're holding yourself accountable. What we found out was interesting is that it's not about the money after a while," said DietBet CEO Jamie Rosen. "The reality is that most people who are successful in this platform, are doing it and succeeding by the community support they got."

"I wouldn't say you would get rich. But you're winning because you're losing weight. That's ultimately what I wanted to do," Smith said.

DietBet said the program is not cheat-proof but Rosen said they have ways to tell if a participant is cheating and flag suspicious behavior.
