Six-year-old helps Mayor Nirenberg light tree at Milam Park

Fantasyland at Milam Park is for all to see, but the main purpose is for its neighbors next door at Children's Hospital of San Antonio.

There is a special meaning about a Christmas tree in the heart of downtown at Milam Park. Mayor Ron Nirenberg lit up the tree lights with the help of 6-year-old Serene Hernandez.

"The lights were on and I liked how they looked," she said.

Serene's dad, Jose Hernandez, said it was a special moment for him to witness.

"It felt really really nice because, especially, we love the city so much," he said. "It was just a big surprise to have her do that."

Fantasyland at Milam Park is for all to see, but the main purpose is for its neighbors next door at Children's Hospital of San Antonio. Friends at Milam Park Director Belinda Benavidez has made it her mission to put up Christmas decor at the park. She hopes to spread holiday cheer for the kids.

"We don't get to choose when we are sick so every child should have a Christmas tree during the holidays," she said.
