S.A. rainbow-bunned burger among contenders in national contest

SAN ANTONIO – If trying unique and colorful food is your thing, then we have the perfect event for you.

Tatu's Food Debauchery and Honeysuckle Teatime are partnering together to bring San Antonians the perfect pairing of Tatu’s Dragon Burger and Honeysuckle’s Unicorn Milkshake.

The magical collaboration allows fans to try Tatu Herrera’s Dragon Burger which is a blend of beef topped with smoked Gouda, chicharron aioli, pickled Kitchen Pride Farms mushrooms and bacon sandwiched between a rainbow pretzel bun.

Yes, you read that right. And what pairs best with a rainbow? A unicorn, of course!

Along with the burger, event goer’s get to try Honeysuckle Teatime’s Unicorn Milkshake that is a lavender milkshake base topped with a unicorn cupcake, edible flowers, chocolate covered strawberries and more sparkly candy than you should probably eat in one sitting.

The special event will be on June 25 and seating will begin at 5:30 p.m. along with the second seating at 7:30 p.m. You can purchase tickets online for $22 at Eventbrite.com.

This event aligns with a competition Tatu’s Food Debauchery is participating in.

The James Beard Foundation’s 2017 Blended Burger Project is a competition where cooks create a Blended Burger by blending at least 25 percent fresh and chopped cultivated mushrooms into a burger patty. This is part of a movement that strives to create an incredibly delicious patty that’s healthier for guests and more sustainable for the planet, according to the foundation’s website.

Along with Herrera, two other San Antonio chefs are participating in the competition.

The second chef is Edward Garcia III of Box Street Social. His burger is a blend of house ground brisket, Angus chuck, and baby Bella mushrooms is served on a toasted sesame seed bun spread with a house-made roasted garlic mayo and topped with melted cheddar cheese, spring greens and a smokey bacon jam.

The third Alamo City chef is Jeff White of Boiler House who’s “Operation Swine Grind” smoked butter burger is a house-ground mixture of pork shoulder, pork belly, smoked butter and shiitake and cremini mushrooms, topped off with a mushroom steak sauce, Taleggio cheese, house pickles, marinated onion escabeche, chicken fat mayo and a sunny side egg.

You can vote for all three burgers online at jamesbeard.org.

Fans are able to vote every day until July 31. According to Blended Burger’s website, the five chefs with the most online votes will win a trip to the historic James Beard House in New York City where they will showcase their blended burgers at an exclusive event in 2018.
