Former presidents honor first reponders at One America Appeal concert

Hundreds of first responders were acknowledged and given a standing ovation by an audience of thousands, including the five living former presidents.

COLLEGE STATION - It could be months or years before relief efforts for Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria victims are complete. Five presidents came together Saturday for the historic "Deep from the Heart: One America Appeal" benefit concert to support those victims.

The concert was also an opportunity to honor first responders who helped save families in the storms.

Around 200 of them were acknowledged and given a standing ovation by an audience of thousands, including former presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Phyllis Wiggins was one of those first responders honored. She served victims of Hurricane Harvey in places like Rockport and Beaumont.

"It really makes my heart feel good," Wiggins said. "It really makes me feel like I'm contributing still to society."

Wiggins said her team of volunteers included responders from as far as Norway and Canada.

The One America Appeal concert raised money to go to organizations helping with relief efforts in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
