SAN ANTONIO - Gayle Hendry was found dead in a residence on the 700 block of Forest Trail by New Braunfels firefighters early Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, her husband Gary Hendry was arrested for murder in Rankin County, Mississippi.
Gayle Hendry had been working as a kindergarten teacher at Specht Elementary School on the north side of San Antonio for nearly 15 years. Parents, colleagues, and students set up a memorial outside the school and spent the day remembering their beloved teacher.
"Her loyalty to her students was just endless, and she was always the first one here in the morning and often the last one to leave here in the afternoon," Principal Jacqueline Sundt said.
Sundt added that Hendry had a son, daughter, and four grandchildren. She says the holidays were an especially fun time in Hendry's classroom.
"She had a series of alternative versions of 'A Night Before Christmas,' and so each day she would share with the children a different version of that story. And by the end of the December month, before the children went into the Christmas holidays, the children would experience all the different versions," Sundt said.
On Friday evening, the community gathered outside Specht Elementary School for a candlelight gathering to celebrate Hendry's life.
