After being shut down by prohibition in 1918, the Phoenix Saloon has been revived in downtown New Braunfels.

Ross Fortune opened the saloon in the same location and under the same name as the original saloon which had not been open in 92 years.

“We were looking to open a venue in Austin but this building was for sale and the history was just fascinating.” said Fortune.

The grand re-opening was held Friday night featuring live music performances. Fortune says he tried to fashion the saloon as close to the original as possible.

The saloon can boast an impressive history from being the first establishment to serve women in Texas to former proprietor William Gephart’s invention of chili powder.
