WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas -- A Central Texas man has been sent to prison for life after receiving his fifth driving while intoxicated conviction.

District Attorney John Bradley said Thursday that Robert Elsey, 36, pleaded not guilty but was then convicted of driving while intoxicated by a jury. The judge who handled the case gave him a life sentence in return.

On Jan. 30, Elsey drove drunk in his Ford F-150 pickup truck and hit the back of a Dodge Ram. The driver of the Dodge was not injured. Elsey was found to have had a blood alcohol level of .23, almost three times the legal limit in Texas.

“Williamson County juries take drunk driving seriously,” District Attorney John Bradley said. “They do not want to wait for a habitual drunk driver to kill someone before separating him from our highways.”

This was Elsey's fifth conviction for DWI. He had made several trips to prison in the past for DWI, bail jumping and robbery.
