BEXAR COUNTY -- A man was shot in the stomach Thursday afternoon after authorities say he opened fire on SWAT team members in northwest Bexar County.
The standoff began around 11 a.m. after deputies encountered the suspect walking with a gun down Saddle Trail Road. The suspect allegedly pointed his rifle at the deputies and then barricaded himself inside his home in 24800 block of Scenic Loop.
Deputies called in the SWAT team, who tried negotiating with the suspect.
Bexar County SWAT Team Commander Lt. Dennis Casillas said the suspect eventually came out of his house and fired at SWAT members, leaving them no choice but to return fire.
Casillas said the suspect, in his 50s, was shot in the stomach and was taken to University Hospital by helicopter.
Authorities said the suspect was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and the recent death of a family member.
"He had not been taking his medication and he had suffered the loss of, I guess, a brother-in-law that he was extremely close to," Casillas said.
Deputies said the suspect, whose name has not yet been released, had recently served time in jail for resisting and evading arrest.
