A hot and dry holiday weekend forecast has sparked an air quality alert for the San Antonio area.

Friday was the first air quality health alert day of the season.  Saturday will be the second.

At Nichols Elementary School, student with asthma were forced to stay inside for recess because of the poor air quality.

"We're not very popular on these days,” said school nurse Rebecca Bell.  “We have to let them know it's for their benefit."

With stiffer regulations on the horizon, a hot summer could lead to further restrictions.

"If we continue to have high ozone numbers, then we might fail to comply with federal air quality standards," said Peter Bella of the Alamo Area Council of Governments.

That could mean more restrictions from the federal government on new construction, especially road construction.

Vehicle emissions is the main local contributor to poor air quality, so official are urging residents, if possible, to drive less on designated alert days.
