Ninety groups of two people each jumped into canoes and paddled their way along a part of San Antonio's River Walk.
Early on Saturday the Ford Canoe Challenge took off, the only time throughout the year that the Alamo City allows people to navigate down the river, said Charlie Leiva, events director of Paseo del Rio Association.
The competition began in 1968, making it one of San Antonio's oldest annual events. That same year the Paseo del Rio Association, which sponsors the event, was founded. It's a non-profit organization that promotes and supports the San Antonio River Walk.
People participated from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and their leaders to the staff of local restaurants and hotels to Mayor Julian Castro.
The teams started at the Chamber of Commerce, headed east through and around the convention center lagoon, through the Rivercenter Mall lagoon and then back to the starting point for a morning dose of healthy competition.SLIDESHOW: Paddlers make splash down San Antonio's River Walk
