They're supposed to protect and serve, not protect each other from getting in trouble.
San Antonio police Chief William McManus said during a press conference on Monday that six officers are under investigation for trying to cover for an off-duty officer who slammed his unmarked unit into a concrete barrier at U.S. 281 and Josephine last Thursday.
The officer was allegedly under the influence and abandoned his unit after the crash.
McManus said responding officers tried to remove evidence of alcohol from the scene and attempted to take the officer home.
The officer behind the wheel and in the center of the cover-up was identified as Sgt. Joe Myers, a 20-year veteran.
McManus said a lieutenant, three sergeants and two other patrol officers are being investigated. Criminal and administrative charges are pending.
McManus said the department learned about the alleged cover-up after another responding officer blew the whistle.
"It was brought to our attention by one of the officers at the scene who is not under investigation," McManus said.
The chief also said Myers' blood alcohol level and urine were tested within hours of the accident.
Police were originally alerted to the crash by nearby security guards, who discovered the off-duty officer blocks from the accident and called 911.
