A United flight left San Antonio and headed for Los Angeles early Tuesday morning, but when smoke appeared in the cockpit, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing back at San Antonio International.

An airport spokesman says that shortly after their scheduled 6:07 a.m. takeoff, pilots on United flight 6435 noticed smoke in the cockpit. 64 passengers were on board.

Pilots were able to turn the plane around and land without incident.

United mechanics are looking for the cause of the problem, while travelers are being shuffled to other flights.
