You’ve heard a lot about antitiobics, but there’s an over-the-counter product called “probiotics” that’s gaining popularity as a preventive medicine. A San Antonio doctor has created a probiotic specifically for children.

Dr. Larry Hoberman of Health By Design sees adults and children with health issues he believes can be cleared up with a natural supplement. He markets a probiotic for adults called EndoMune, and now, a powder version for children called EndoMune Junior.
The idea is to restore the natural balance of so-called “good” bacteria in the body, to clear up gastrointestinal symptoms and boost the immune system.

“There’s lots of studies that have looked at using probiotics and there isn’t any adverse effect,” Hoberman said. “And that’s one of the really nice things about probiotics. They’re natural.”

That’s reassuring the moms like Melissa Babcock, who gives the supplement to her three-year-old son Garrett mixed with juice. It’s tasteless and he never even notices it’s there.

“He had constant ear infections after he started daycare and was on many and multiple antibiotics,” Babcock explained. “We felt that this was good to help regulate his GI tract.”

The dose is ¼ teaspoon once a day. That pumps in ten billion good bacteria. One jar costs $20 and lasts about two months.

While Hoberman says people should check with their doctors before using the product, he’s convinced it can be an important tool for long-term wellness.

“It really has an impact on helping to lessen the risk of developing eczema, some of the allergies, and also respiratory symptoms,” Hoberman asserted.

EndoMune Junior seels at more than 20 San Antonio-area outlets like health food and vitamin stores and local pharmacies. You can also find it online.
