SAN ANTONIO -- It is going to take nine hours for doctors to perform three life-saving surgeries on a San Antonio police officer who was struck by a  truck on  Loop 410 last weekend.

Officers on Tuesday filled the halls at University Hospital to donate blood for fellow officer Jonathan Esquivel, who was hit by a pickup truck while working the scene of an accident.

Esquivel, 28, was placing cones on the access road on Loop 410 near Evers when he was struck by a white pickup truck at around 6 p.m. Sunday.

The driver, 40-year-old Shad Christopher Modesett, had reportedly taken his eyes off the road for a moment and swerved to avoid crashing into the stopped vehicles.

Esquivel's family said on Tuesday that wounded officer is coherent and was even able to give them a thumbs up.

Dozens of police officers, firefighters and friends have donated blood for the injured officer.
