SAN ANTONIO --San Antonio’s Nix Hospital is putting out a warning. As you turn on the heaters this winter, be careful to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

People with severe cases of CO exposure can end up in the hyperbaric chamber on the fifth floor of the Nix Hospital. 100% oxygen administered under pressure can help patients recover.

Faulty heaters are a danger, poisoning an average of 12 San Antonians each year.

The symptoms are fatigue, nausea and vomiting.

“What we are asking is if you suspect you have a heater that’s not operating properly, get out of the house,” said Nix Hyperbaric Clinical Director Jim Sheffield. “If you have these symptoms, get to an emergency room. Play it safe.”

Carbon monoxide detectors only cost about $20 and will sound an alarm is your family is in danger.
