A male was shot and killed shortly before noon Sunday while sitting in the front seat of his vehicle at a Park and Ride in Lytle, police say.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 39-year-old Guadalupe Hernandez Junior of Somerset. Meanwhile, Lytle police say the shooter may have been acting in self-defense.

Texas Rangers and a K-9 unit were at the scene at the intersection of IH-35 and FM 2790 across the street from the Lytle State Bank.

Police say Hernandez was fighting with a woman and punched a hole through the windshield of a late-model Mercedes. Witnesses say the shooter got involved to protect the woman and himself.  They say he shot Hernandez once in the chest.

The shooter, who was still on the scene when the officers arrived, is being questioned by Lytle police.

His name has not been released, and he has yet to be charged. Investigators remain extremely tight-lipped about the case.

Lytle Police Chief Richey Priest did say the case is "pretty startling," pointing out that it is the first Lytle homicide in the 13 years he has served as police chief.
