BEXAR COUNTY -- A man with a tall tale found himself in real trouble after posing as a Texas Ranger at a rodeo in Helotes, authorities said.
Gregory Davis, 60, was wearing a badge that said "ranger" and was packing a Colt model 1911 pistol when he carried on a conversation with the Helotes police chief, according to a Bexar County arrest warrant.
He also had a business card that claimed he represents the "republic State of Texas," according to the warrant.
However, the chief noticed the "r" in republic was not capitalized, and decided to call the Texas Rangers, the warrant said.
The Rangers had no knowledge of a Colonel Greg Davis.
Davis was charged with impersonating a peace officer and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
Davis also claimed to be a Vietnam veteran, a former Green Beret and a cowboy minister who led a black-ops mission in which he was shot, stabbed and suffered shrapnel wounds, according to the arrest warrant.
