More than 900 stray animals have been picked up in District 2 in just the last few weeks!
That is a lot of homeless dogs and cats.
Saturday kicked off Dog Awareness Week, which is June 12 through June 20 this year. Free spay and nueter procedures where offered at the Ella Austin Center.
Unfortunately many strays end up put to death. To prevent that, organizers are trying to control the pet population where the problem is most prevalent.
"This district alone has had 900 stray dogs picked up, so it is a major problem. And being part of the River Center Cluster we want to do a community service and give back to our community during these tough economic times," says Margie O'Connell.
This is the second annual Dog Awareness Week to focus on responsible pet ownership and to reach a no-kill goal for the city.
Also if you are a dog lover, you might want to attedn this year's River City Cluster of Dog Shows featuring the Bexar County Kennel Club and the Comal County Kennel Club.
The event is being held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center at Market and Alamo St., June 17 through June 20. The shows begin daily at 8 a.m., with best-of show presentations at 6:30 p.m.
