It happens every day: drivers sending out text messages without a second thought of what lies ahead.

It may only take a few seconds, but studies show those who text behind the wheel are 23 times more likely to get into an accident.

A new Texas law now makes it illegal to use your cell phone in a school zone. We caught up with DPS trooper Jason Reyes in order to find out who's breaking the rules.

Within one hou,r we watched Reyes had pulled over four different drivers, drivers who said they didn't think twice about pulling out their cell phones.

A report by the National Safety Council found cell phone use leads to about 1.6 million crashes a year .

About 200,000 of those accidents are caused by texting while driving. Studies show teenagers are especially prone to text and drive.

Just last year a graphic and disturbing public service announcement was released out of the U.K. It shows just how fast things can spin out of control.

Meanwhile others like Jonathan Young out of Jacksonville, Florida, have come up with their own safety related software.

For about $40 parents can download a system called "Textecution". It's designed to disable a phone's Internet and texting functions when a person is traveling at 10 miles an hour or more .

According to Reyes, state troopers are seeing more and more cell phone-related crashes in Bexar County every day. But in most cases all it takes to prevent an accident is more focus on the road.

"We're so fixated on our cell phones. We're so fixated at texting and driving we lose sight of what we're supposed to be doing...and we're supposed to be driving," said Reyes.
